Awake is the biographical story of Paramhansa Yogananda, the indian guru and author of “Autobiography of a Yogi” who in 1920 brought Hindu spirituality to the West. The movie portrays his life and influence on yoga, religion and science, combining re-enactment, interviews, and a large array of real-life footages. The film’s storytelling is straightforward and compelling, as is the testimony of his devotees and of a few celebrities among which we mention Ravi Shankar, Deepak Chopra and George Harrison. The movie also features a contemporary scientist who talks about Yogananda’s understanding of neuroplasticity decades before Western science even started considering it.
